What comes in each box
Shark FlexStyle HD435: the most complete kit for the money
According to its Amazon.com listing, the HD435 comes with two 1.25 in Auto-Wrap curlers, a concentrator, a curl-defining diffuser and an oval brush. It is rated at 1,600 W, and Shark says it keeps heat low by “measuring and regulating temperatures 1000x per second.” The wand rotates, so the same tool works as a styler or a regular blow dryer, diffuser included. For a bathroom where one tool has to do everything, that is the deciding argument.
Dyson Airwrap Origin and Airwrap i.d.: the simplest technique
The Airwrap Origin is Dyson’s entry model. Dyson ships it with a 1.6 in long barrel that curls in both directions, an anti-snag loop brush and a fast dryer. Its Dyson Digital Motor V9 spins “at up to 110,000rpm” at 1,300 W, with 3 heat settings, 3 speeds, a cold shot, a 1.5 lb weight and a 2-year limited warranty. It costs $399.99 on dyson.com (checked October 24, 2026).
The Airwrap i.d. adds Bluetooth and the MyDyson app, which tailors curl settings to your hair profile. The Straight+Wavy version is $499.99 on dyson.com (checked October 24, 2026); its Amazon.com listing is rated 4.5/5 from 717 ratings but showed no buy button that day.
What the spec sheets don’t tell you
Cross-checking the Dyson and Shark pages, the Amazon.com listings and two side-by-side reviews, three points stand out that none of these sources makes on its own.
- Price per curler is where the gap shows. The Airwrap Origin costs $399.99 for its single barrel; the Shark HD435 works out to $174.50 per curler. Even counting that the Dyson barrel handles both directions ($200.00 per curl direction), the Shark is cheaper for the same job, and it adds a diffuser.
- Wattage won’t tell you which dries faster. The Shark lists 1,600 W, the Dyson 1,300 W, but wattage mostly reflects the heater. Neither brand publishes an airflow figure on these pages, and the side-by-side reviews we read did not time drying. Don’t buy on that number.
- The real choice is curl hold versus kit. Both reviews below found Dyson curls lasted slightly longer, yet both named the Shark the better buy. If your hair holds a curl well, the extra kit wins; if it drops curls by lunch, the Dyson’s edge matters more.
On results, the two side-by-side reviews we cross-checked (PureWow and Gear Patrol) agree: Dyson curls last a little longer, the gap is small, and the Shark is the better value. Gear Patrol found the Shark’s curls bouncier and more defined and the Dyson’s more voluminous; on fine, straight hair, both had fallen noticeably after eight hours, the Dyson slightly less.
Which one for your hair type?
| Your hair | Our advice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Curly to coily, diffused | Shark FlexStyle HD435 | Diffuser in the box and a full blow-dryer mode |
| Fine and straight, curls drop fast | Dyson Airwrap Origin | Slightly longer curl hold in reviews, one barrel for both directions |
| Long and thick | Shark FlexStyle HD435 | Two curlers to alternate sections, rotate the wand to dry fully |
| Straight to wavy, want guided settings | Dyson Airwrap i.d. | Bluetooth and the MyDyson app set the curl timing for you |
| Short, blowouts only | Neither | A hot air brush does the job for far less |

Quick tips before you buy
- Finish each curl with cool air: both tools curl with airflow rather than a hot plate, so a cool blast is what sets the curl, especially on fine hair.
- The Shark uses one curler per direction: you swap curlers to change direction, a small extra step compared with the Dyson.
- Attachments don’t swap between brands: a lost curler is replaced from the same maker.
1. We count the attachments that actually curl, not the “in 1” number.
2. We check today’s price on Amazon.com and on the brand’s own store.
3. We cross-check brand specs with side-by-side published reviews.
