What should a beginner gel kit include?
A gel manicure relies on five things: a base coat, which bonds the gel to your nail, the color, a top coat, which seals and adds shine, a UV/LED lamp, which cures each layer, and a file and buffer. Add what kits leave out: pure acetone and cotton for removal, which none of the five listings mentions.
Extras pile up fast: 35 colors, rhinestones, a nail drill. Twelve to twenty shades are plenty to learn. The weak spot is elsewhere: the lamp, whose timers don’t always cover the gel’s cure time.

Each kit in detail, and who it’s for
JODSONE 20 colors: the lamp and the gel finally agree
The JODSONE kit costs $17.99 (checked October 21, 2026) and its listing is the only one to give both numbers you need: the lamp runs 5, 30 or 60 seconds, and JODSONE says the gel normally needs 60 to 120 seconds. So you know upfront to run two cycles when the gel asks for more than a minute. You get 23 bottles of 5 mL (20 colors, a base, a glossy and a matte top coat), a lightweight bottomless lamp that also fits over toes, and manicure tools. Sold and shipped by Amazon, which makes returns easy. Best for: a first gel manicure at the lowest price.
Beetles 20 colors: bigger bottles where it counts
At $19.99 (checked October 21, 2026), the Beetles starter set pairs 20 colors in 5 mL bottles with a base, a glossy top and a matte top in 7.5 mL bottles, a USB lamp (adapter not included: Beetles asks for a certified 5V/2A one) and 7 tools. Beetles tells you to cure each layer 60 to 90 seconds. Base and top coat run out first, so those bigger bottles are a real plus. Best for: anyone who plans to do their nails often.
Beetles 34 pieces: the best rated
The Beetles 34-piece kit, $20.99 (checked October 21, 2026), 4.6/5, adds nail glue to 20 colors, a base, a top and a matte top, with an auto-sensor lamp (adapter not included). The listing doesn’t give a cure time: follow the printed instructions. Best for: mixing gel polish with press-on tips.
JODSONE 32 colors: for color lovers
The JODSONE 32-color kit, $19.99 (checked October 21, 2026), lines up 32 shades, a base, a no-wipe top, a matte top and a glitter top, with an LCD lamp, four timers and an auto sensor. Best for: anyone who already knows the basics and wants choice.
COSCELIA 53 pieces: everything, drill included
The COSCELIA kit, $26.99 (checked October 21, 2026), adds an electric nail drill to 35 colors and five base and top coats; its 30-LED lamp has 5, 30 and 60-second timers and a low-heat mode. Best for: once you’ve mastered a few manicures. Start with acetone removal, and use the drill later.
Who should skip it
- If you’ve ever reacted to gel or acrylic nails (redness, itching around the nail), check with a dermatologist first.
- If your nails are damaged or infected, let them heal before your first manicure.
- If you already own a lamp from a gel brand, buy that brand’s gel polish rather than a full kit.
How to get your first gel manicure right
- Prep. Clean, filed nails, lightly buffed to remove the shine. Don’t cut your cuticles: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises against cutting or pushing them back.
- Base coat. One thin coat, stopping short of the skin: uncured gel should never touch your skin. Cure.
- Color. Two thin coats, sometimes three according to buyers, each cured.
- Top coat. Cap the free edge too, cure, then wipe off the sticky layer if the instructions say so.
- Curing. Follow the time on the gel’s instructions: if it calls for 120 seconds and the timer stops at 60, run two cycles.
How to remove gel polish without damaging your nails
The AAD method: petroleum jelly on the skin around the nail, a piece of cotton cut to nail size and soaked in pure acetone, plastic wrap over it (it seals better than foil), 10 minutes, then a warm, damp washcloth. Don’t scrape, peel or file it off: you would take the surface of your nail with it. Moisturize your cuticles every day for a week, and give your nails a break between manicures.
What comparing the five listings reveals
Read the five listings against dermatologists’ advice and three things stand out that no single listing tells you.
1. Matching the lamp to the gel is rarely spelled out. Two listings give the gel’s cure time (JODSONE 20 colors: 60 to 120 s; Beetles 20 colors: 60 to 90 s), and three list the lamp’s timers (JODSONE 20 colors and COSCELIA: up to 60 s; JODSONE 32 colors: four timers). Only one gives both. Yet the British Association of Dermatologists asks users to stick with the lamp recommended by the gel’s maker: under-cured gel raises the risk of allergy.
2. “TPO-free” is worth checking. This photoinitiator has been banned in cosmetics sold in the European Union since September 1, 2025 (Regulation (EU) 2025/877). It is not banned in the US, and none of these five US listings mentions it. If you’d rather avoid it, look for “Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide” in the ingredient list on the box.
3. Price per color is misleading. It ranges from about $0.62 per shade (JODSONE 32 colors) to $1.05 (Beetles 34 pieces), based on prices checked October 21, 2026. But base and top coat are used on every manicure, so they run out first. That’s why the Beetles starter set’s 7.5 mL base and top are worth the extra $2. Real starting cost: the kit, acetone and cotton, then a refill of base and top coat.
1. A lamp that matches the gel: a written cure time and a timer that covers it. 2. A readable formula: ingredient list on the box. 3. The essentials over sheer quantity: base, top, file, buffer, twelve to twenty colors.
Gels contain (meth)acrylates, which are contact allergens. In a 2018 study of 4,931 patients by British dermatologists, 2-HEMA was the most common culprit. Once sensitized, a person can react to dental or medical treatments that use the same substances. Keep uncured gel off your skin: latex or vinyl gloves don’t protect against it. Redness or itching around the nails or on the eyelids: stop and see a doctor.
If you have concerns about your skin, ask a dermatologist before your first use; the manufacturer’s instructions always come first.
FAQ
How many colors does a beginner gel kit need?
Twelve to twenty are plenty. Base and top coat, used on every manicure, run out long before the colors.
How long should I cure each coat?
The time on your gel’s instructions. JODSONE gives 60 to 120 seconds and Beetles 60 to 90 seconds; if the timer stops sooner, run two cycles.
Can I use the kit’s lamp with another brand of gel polish?
British dermatologists advise against it: use the lamp recommended by the gel’s maker, because incomplete curing raises the risk of allergy.
Is a “TPO-free” gel kit safer?
TPO has been banned in EU cosmetics since September 1, 2025, but not in the US. The main risk with any gel remains allergy to (meth)acrylates.
Do I need a nail drill to remove gel polish?
No. The AAD’s acetone soak-off is gentler on your nails; a drill is an option once you’re comfortable.
Our verdict

For less than a single salon gel manicure, you’re set for weeks of glossy nails.
